Neurobiological basis of autism spectrum disorders

In the neuroscience and psychology, the concept of the self is still not well defined. However, there is an agreement that some aspects of this complex construct may be described in relation to our social interactions. People with autism-spectrum-disorder (ASD) are disturbed in their social behavior. Up to now, the research on ASD was mainly focused on how the ASD patients are processing socially relevant information regarding other people (e.g., recognition of faces, recognition of emotions in faces, gaze direction, prosody etc.). Recently, however, the focus of attention has been shifted to the topics related to the self, i.e., processing of self-related information. Such investigation may help to understand neural correlates of the self in ASD.

Research will be focused on neurobiological basis of processing of self-related information in the group of patient with ASD and in the control group, carefully adjusted to the patients group in respect of their age and IQ. This research will be basically conducted using the event-related potential method.
